Living with Sjogren's disease has truly been a life changing experience and a journey like no other. The years of waiting, wondering, not knowing who to talk to or where to turn for advice and answers are a not-so-distant memory.
From the start of my journey, I felt so confused, misunderstood and completely lost. Sjogren’s disease primarily affects women age 40 and up…that delicate period in our lives where many are facing perimenopause or early menopause. During some of our most productive years, living with a debilitating autoimmune disease robs you of being well. In our prime years, we’re expected to do well and thrive—personally and professionally—even when we aren’t well.
My desire in writing Surviving Sjogren's was to share a bit of my own journey and to provide some insight, resources and practical tips on how to better manage and thrive, living with this horrible disease. Priority vs Option
As women, we often put everyone else’s needs and wants above our own. While operating in that spirit of love and nurturing, it is vital to fill your own cup first. Autoimmune warriors know this all too well. Fellow SPOONIES understand the struggle we face of starting each day on a half empty tank. Finding ways to set healthy boundaries is a crucial step in advocating for yourself. Here’s 3 tips that help me conserve some energy while navigating this new reality.

Prioritize Sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine to wind down and ensure a restful slumber.
Hydration is Key: Our bodies are mostly water, and Sjogren’s dries everything in its path, so staying hydrated is crucial for optimal function. Foods high in water content, such as melons are an excellent source, as is low sugar yogurt. Hydrate throughout the day to minimize the possibility of a flare.
Move Your Body: Low impact exercise can improve blood flow and help reduce stiff joints and muscle pain. Toe touches, foot pumps or any motion that directs blood back to the heart, even in short bursts, can be beneficial.
Declutter Your Diet
Spring cleaning isn't just about physical spaces! It's a great time to re-evaluate your eating habits and "declutter" your diet for optimal health. Here are some tips to get you started:
Limit Processed Foods
Processed foods are often loaded with unhealthy fats, added sugars, and sodium. Opt for whole, unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins whenever possible.
Embrace the Rainbow
Aim to fill your plate with a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables. They're packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that your body needs to thrive.
